DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION AND EXTENSION
The institute is offering specialization in this field to
prepare students for the growing mass media industry with
special focus on development communication. The course is
based on the premise that Media and Communication have a tremendous
role in society. They can be effectively used to enable people
to participate in the process of development and lead better
quality of lives. During the course, the students are not
only sensitized to the various development issues and challenges
facing the country but are also trained in planning, developing
and using traditional and contemporary media including radio
and video for enabling students to use media for addressing
developmental concerns. The Department has a state-of- the-art
audio lab for training students in radio production. As part
of the curriculum, the Honours students produce a documentary
film based on development issues using professional equipment
for shooting and editing of the films. The students are given
theoretical and practical training in Development communication
Media systems and Communication technologies, Sustainable
development, Gender issues as well as Extension management.
Field visits, interface with the industry, lectures by experts,
inter-college and intra-college competitions are a part and
parcel of the course. The Honours students are placed in summer
internships for two to four weeks in media related organizations
to get a hands on experience of the industry. The Department
has highly experienced faculty in the areas of Development
Communication as well as Mass Communication. The faculty is
engaged in several research projects funded by different organization.
Besides undertaking research work, the Department trains the
students in fulfilling their social responsibilities by reaching
out to the community through the, 'Each One Teach One' programme.
JOB PROSPECTS
The students can either take up jobs directly after graduation
or else undertake Master's Programmes in a variety of subjects
such as Development Communication and extension, Development
studies, Mass Communication, Media Management, Social work
or Business Management. They can undertake Diploma courses
in Development Communication, Advertising and Public Relations,
Media production, Corporate Communication, Broadcast or Print
Journalism. The students can seek jobs in various sectors
of media production, development organizations, Government
as well as Non-Government organizations as well as free lancers.
The can also opt for teaching or else undertake research in
allied areas.
