DEPARTMENT
OF FOOD & NUTRITION
The Food and Nutrition Department offers the subject as a
part of B.Sc. Home Science (both Pass & Hons.) curriculum.
In addition, the Department also offers a one-year Post Graduate
Diploma in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition and a two-year
Master's degree in Food and Nutrition. The department holds
seminars, workshops, lectures by eminent nutritionists from
time to time to widen the horizon of the students. The department
is actively engaged in community based programmes for imparting
nutrition and health messages to the under-privileged sections
of the society. Several research projects have been undertaken
by the department, sponsored by DWCD of Ministry of HRD, ICMR,
ICAR, UNICEF, DST, Micronutrient Initiative, Helpage India,
other government and International organizations. The faculty
is actively involved in professional societies such as Nutrition
Society of India, Indian Dietetics association, Society of
Geronotological Research, and Nutrition Foundation of India.
At the undergraduate level, the students are given knowledge
of Food Science, Nutrition for diverse age groups, Nutritional
Biochemistry, Diet Therapy as well as Food Processing. The
students undergo rigorous practical training in the above
areas to make the learning holistic. The learning is multifaceted
as the students opting for this major are also given knowledge
of management, entrepreneurship development, human development
etc.
The Post-graduate Diploma in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition
is a comprehensive course dealing in subjects such as therapeutic
nutrition, public health nutrition and institutional food
management. Courses in nutrition research, nutritional biochemistry,
food microbiology and safety and applied physiology are offered
alongside to support the specialized courses. A three-month
internship in a multi specialty hospital at the end of the
programme enables the students to get hands on training in
patient care and dietetic management. The Master's course
in Food and Nutrition has produced professionals, many of
whom have secured merit positions in the University and are
very well placed in health specialization and nutrition-related
sectors. The Department offers specialization in Clinical
Nutrition, Public Nutrition & Programme Planning and Food
Science & Processing. Community work, field visits and project
work are a part and parcel of the programme. The students
do an eight week internship and conduct research work in different
areas of Nutrition in the M.Sc. dissertation.
JOB PROSPECTS
At the culmination of the course, the students can either
seek jobs directly or opt for the Master's programme in Food
& Nutrition, Food Processing etc and Post Graduate Diploma
in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition, Food Processing
etc. They can seek jobs as Dieticians and Nutrition Consultants
in hospitals, clinics fitness centres, international organizations
and NGOs. They can also join catering organizations, food
processing industry or else opt for teaching and research.
