DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
The course envisages to sensitize and develop skills and insights
into understanding of human development across the life span.
Being interdisciplinary in nature, the subject draws the content
from various fields of study which includes sociology, psychology,
pediatrics, anthropology, special education, anatomy, genetics
etc. The course of study encourages students to analyze their
self, develop their personalities through introspection and
enhanced self-development. Broadly speaking, the content covers
gender issues, education of special groups of people, empowerment
of women, gerontology, mental health and adjustment issues.
It also tries to understand childhood from socio-cultural
perspective. The importance of family dynamics and parenting
is discussed upfront.
The practicum work involves imbibing in the students, scientific
methods to study human development. Practical also aim at
enhancing the potential of each student and assist them in
recognizing their self worth and own identities. A sensitivity
to work with community and contribute in the development of
various disadvantaged groups and others is the forte of the
departmental activities. The Department organizes seminars,
workshops and takes up projects related to the issues of human
development and childhood studies. The faculty members are
actively involved in providing counseling, consultancy to
schools, governmental and non-governmental organizations.
They are also involved in research projects.
JOB PROSPECTS
Students can either seek jobs after graduation or opt for
post graduate study in Human Development, Social Work, Clinical
Psychology, Counseling etc. They can take up jobs as Counselors,
Teachers, Education Officers, Social Workers, and Researchers
or can develop programmes for media. The ones with initiative
can start their own pre-schools and run their own special
schools and counseling and consultancy services. They get
absorbed for jobs in government organizations and schools,
international organizations like CARE & UNICEF, in NGOs, and
also in industries as HR consultants. They can work with pediatricians
and in Adolescent Clinics as Development Psychologists. They
can also contribute tremendously to the IT industry by producing
software for children. They can act as consultants on the
internet.
