DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY
Microbiology is a challenging and exciting scientific
discipline dealing with microbes. Recognising the need of
Microbiology in the industry, agriculture as well as medical
research, the Institute started an under-graduate course in
Microbiology in 1992-93. The course being offered in only
select colleges of University of Delhi has an intake of 30
students. Microbiology is an applied science forming the core
of Biotechnology and Molecular Biology. The importance of
Microbiology can be judged from the fact that about 1/3rd
of the Nobel prizes in the field of Physiology and Medicine
has been won by people working on microbiological problems.
The three-year curriculum with fifteen theory papers as well
as practical has been designed to equip the students in various
aspects of Microbiology, including the current developments
in the field. The curriculum has been revised with effect
from 2004-2005, with the view to make it more student-friendly
and to incorporate the knowledge of computers in the field.
The Microbiology department has well equipped laboratory and
very competent teaching and technical staff for carrying out
experiments as well as research work.
JOB PROSPECTS
On completion of graduation, the students could pursue Master's
programme in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology,
Genetic Engineering or Bioinformatics. They can seek jobs
as academicians, researchers, biotechnologists, plant pathologists,
epidemiologists, and clinical microbiologists, quality control
technologists in the field of medicine, agriculture, food
establishments and industries.
