Master's in Food & Nutrition : No. of Seats 19

Started in 1993, the course attracts the cream of students from both B.Sc. Home Science Pass & Hons. While 50% of the seats are filled on the basis of merit from B.Sc. Home Science Hons, the remaining seats are filled on the basis of entrance examination conducted by the Deptt. of Home Science in early July. The course contents have been revised from the academic session 2007-08 to make them more holistic, contextual and industry oriented. The department has consistently produced excellent results and its alumni are employed in reputed universities, research institutes, schools, Government/private hospitals, health clinics, catering institutes, food industry and medical transcription companies.

Eligibility Criteria for M.Sc. Home Science (Food and Nutrition)


B.Sc. (Hons.) Home Science with specialization in Food and Nutrition

55% or above marks in the overall aggregate and 55% or above marks in the aggregate of Nutritional Biochemistry and any two of the following subjects of B.Sc. (Hons.) Home Science with specialization in Food and Nutrition:

1. Foundation of Food and Nutrition
2. Nutrition for the Family
3. Community Nutrition
4. Food Science and Processing
5. Diet Therapy

OR

B.Sc. (Pass) Home Science


55% or above marks in the overall aggregate and 55% or above marks in the aggregate of Nutritional Biochemistry and any two of the following subjects of B.Sc. (Hons.) Home Science

1. Food Science
2. Normal Nutrition
3. Community Nutrition and Dietetics

OR

B.Sc. (Hons.) Food Technology

55% or above marks in the overall aggregate and 55% or above marks in the aggregate of Nutritional Biochemistry and any two of the following subjects:

1. Food Science
2. Nutrition
3. Microbiology


Admission Procedure

Category 1:
Candidates seeking admission on merit on the basis of marks obtained in the B.Sc. (Hons.) examination of the University of Delhi, in the year in which the admission is sought.

50% of seats in M.Sc. Home Science (Food and Nutrition) will be filled in without the written admission test, based on the following criteria in the order of merit:

1. 60% or above marks in the aggregate of the B.Sc. (Hons.) Home Science, University of Delhi, in the year in which the admission is being sought.
2. 50% or above marks in each of above six subjects in the area of specialization of B.Sc. (Hons.) Home Science, University of Delhi.

Category 2:
Candidates seeking admission through entrance examination

The remaining 50% seats will be offered to the students on the basis of the performance in the written admission test and the last qualifying examination. The criteria for arriving at the merit would be weightage of 50% to the written admission test, and 50% to the overall aggregate of the qualifying examination.

On the basis of performance in the written admission test (40% or above marks), separate merit lists will be prepared for each specialization, the list will be displayed.

Candidates having passed their B.Sc. (Hons.) Home Science examination are advised to seek admission to M.Sc. through entrance examination, as well.

Candidates may appear for any or all specializations, if otherwise eligible.

Reservations will be followed as per Delhi University guidelines.

Candidates who have passed the B.Sc. (Home Science) examination from Agricultural Universities, which follow the grading system of evaluation, must have obtained 4.00 overall grade points average out of 5.0 or 3.25 overall grade points out of 4.00 and grade "A" in the subject concerned.

The candidates for admission to Post Graduate courses for the reserved category of SC/ST will be eligible for admission in both category I and II in each area. The candidates should have 40% or more marks in aggregate and 40% marks in the subjects mentioned against each course in B.Sc. Home Science. No selection in this category will be made if the candidate has not appeared for the screening test and obtained a minimum of 35% marks.

Screening Test

All those students who fulfill the eligibility conditions and have not otherwise been selected under Category I can take the screening test.

On the basis of performance in the Screening Test separate merit lists will be prepared for M.Sc. courses. The list will be displayed at the Institute indicating the marks obtained by the candidates. Admission will be offered according to merit and the number of seats available.

Note: In case of a tie, the candidate securing higher percentage of marks in the qualifying examination will be offered admission first. In case of candidates having equal marks in the last qualifying examination, the date of birth would be the basis for selection, i.e. the candidate senior in age will be offered admission first.

Age: A candidate will not be qualified for admission to the course unless she is twenty years of age before the first day of October of the year she seeks admission. The Vice Chancellor may, however, on the basis of individual merit relax the limit upto a period of one year.

Note: Any student seeking admission on wrong information in respect of age, subjects and percentage of marks etc. will have her admission cancelled at any time when it comes to the notice of University Authorities. In case some seats reserved for special categories as referred above are left vacant, these will be declared open and filled in order of merit from the general category.

Internship of 6-8 week duration after the Part II examinations

Note:

  • Pass Percentage: Minimum marks required to pass the examination is 40% in each course, in theory and practicals separately. However, the candidate must secure an overall aggregate of 50%.
  • The marks obtained in the House Examination of M.Sc.(I) will be taken into account for the final allotment of the specialization/elective subjects of M.Sc.(II). The concerned institute will have the discretion to offer one or more elective subjects in a particular academic session (subject to the availability of logistic support).
  • As per the University directive 25% of the maximum marks of each theory course will be assigned for internal assessment.
  • All Practical Examinations shall be of 6 hours duration. 40% of the marks for the practical examination shall be reserved for fieldwork and/or laboratory records of the candidates and will be awarded by the teacher responsible for the course.
  • Seminar, placement reports and projects of individual papers will be evaluated by a panel of teachers internally and marks will be sent to the University through the Head of the Department.
